古くから英国王室を頂点とする貴族文化が根付いているイギリスには、「他者への礼節を重んじるために装う」という考え方が根底にあります。英国紳士とは身なりをきっちり整えて、相手に失礼のないような振る舞いが美徳とされてきました。
そのため、イギリス発祥の服にはドレッシーなものが多く、スーツをはじめ、チェスターコートやステンカラコートなど、エレガントに着こなすものが多くなっています。
軍服として生まれたトレンチコートや、乗馬服として生まれたキルティングジャケットなどにもどことなく品を感じさせるのは、他者への礼節を重んじる、という考え方が反映されているからなのです。
ブリティッシュスタイルのスーツは、パットがしっかり入っていて構築的だったり、生地が重厚だったりすることですが、それにはイギリスの実直な国民性と関係があるのかもしれません。着て自分が楽になるのでなく、多少我慢しても相手に失礼のない、きちんとした装いをする。そんなイギリス人らしい考え方が反映されているのでしょう。
